8 Ways to #PTFAM

Congratulations! You made it into PT school! The competition is finally over. We have to work as a team in the clinic and collaborate with other health professionals in the future, so why not start now? I attend Andrews University and this is how we work together as a family.

1) Mentors

Prior to orientation, we were taken under the wings of mentors. Each first year was personally chosen by a second-year student. They were willing to impart knowledge, share textbooks, study with us, and give us practical advice for the road ahead.

As a whole, the entire second year class took the first years under their guidance as well. As a class they brought a plethora of treats after our first test, made a class board with encouraging words, and organized a beach social for us to get to know them and each other on a personal level in a relaxed environment. Because of these traditions given to us as first years, we have paid it forward to the current first years.

2) Study groups

For one of our first practicals, the second years put on a study session for us. Several stations were set up and we split into groups and rotated throughout the different stations. Each station was a mock situation of every type of question we would encounter in our test.

Inside our own class, like anywhere else, students have created separate study groups with the people they learn best with. However, everyone is truly open to invite anyone to a study session and extend a helping hand to anyone who is in need. Some people have different strengths in certain classes so everyone learns from each other.

3) Outings

When possible, our class gets together to take a break from the classroom. We like to spend quality time at a few of these places:

4) Birthdays

Every month there is a birthday celebration to celebrate our classmates. Homemade goodies, popcorn, cookies, donuts, juice, fruits, ,and veggies are brought to celebrate our classmates who enjoyed a birthday that month.

5) Personalities

Our class is just like a regular family. Everyone has their own personality. Here are a few of ours:

6) Volunteer Work

  • Herbie Clinic, Benton Harbor
  • Flint water drive
  • Operation Christmas Child
  • Mission trips

7) Worships

My particular PT program is at a Christian university. We pray before classes and tests, and every Thursday there is an hour blocked out of our schedule for us to be able to attend chapel. Different groups also have their own worship services during the week, as well. My class also has a few musicians who play for different churches and we even have a few chaplains as class officers.

8) The Internet

We all use it so we might as well use it to our advantage. Here is what we use:

  • Private Facebook Group: “Class Notes interspersed with bad jokes and venting.”
  • Google Drive: Document/file/ebook/article-sharing
  • Youtube: Useful for sharing lab videos
  • Cluster: An app like a private “Instagram” where we all can share photos and videos to look back on during our graduation weekends.

Does your school have a mentorship program?

“Physical therapy is the perfect career for me, but I don’t even know where to start.”

Mentorship is a buzzword these days. Everyone wants a mentor but no one wants to be one. Where would you be today if you had a PT mentor during undergrad? Join the Pre-PT Facebook group to be a mentor to students who are where you were not too long ago and wish to be in your shoes. Click the picture to join or join here to advocate for our profession and mentor future PTs. Add and share with any Pre-PTs!Screen Shot 2017-04-08 at 12.49.08 AM.png
